Letter from Africa

Filed under: Comedy — Carolyn @ 3:16 pm

RahilaMy college roommate and close buddy Ginger O’Neill is currently in Niger volunteering for the Peace Corps.  She sent me this picture of her host sister, Rahila, with a note about the 2007 EstroGenius Festival and her portion of it called “Voices of Africa.”  Be like a bra and support these girls!

EstroGenius 2007 – Voices of Africa
Benefit for Young Girls Scholarship Fund

This year, the festival will launch an exciting new program VOICES OF AFRICA (VOA),
a collaboration with Peace Corps Niger. Ginger O’Neill, a former EstroGenius volunteer, is currently serving a two-year appointment in Birni N’Gaoure, Niger about two hours from the country’s capital, Niamey.

She teaches songwriting as well as reading and writing to girls in her village. She has encouraged them to express themselves through music, poetry and monologues, which she has translated into English. These pieces will be performed by NYC teenage girls as part of the EstroGenius Festival this fall. The money raised from these performances will benefit the Peace Corps Partnership Program.

Erin Sans Her Cello Will Be In The Fringe Festival

Filed under: Comedy — Nichelle @ 1:02 pm

Erin and Her Cello

Chicks and Giggles performer Erin Hall will be in Williamsburg: The Musical which is part of the New York Fringe Festival.

Williamsburg! The Musical is a hilarious pop/rock parody of
Brooklyn’s over-hyped hipster ‘hood. A suicidal Trust-Funder
encounters a disenchanted Hasidic Jew in the shadow of the
Williamsburg Bridge. On their potholed road to love, they battle a
greedy real estate agent whose diabolical plan to overtake the
neighborhood spawns an army of zombie-like hipsters. Will the unlikely
heroes of Williamsburg band together to save the sub-borough? Or will
gentrification reign? With songs like “One Stop (To Excitement),”
“Peter Luger Lullaby,” and “Million Dollar Crackhouse,” this timely
Roast of the Burg juxtaposes Missed Connections and “Hipstory Lessons”
to comically exploit the cultural mish-mash of “the coolest
neighborhood in America.”
